WE ARE HERE is a celebration of Black British peoples and a recognition of African diaspora presence in the UK spanning centuries.

The 2020 UK Black History Month celebration was an opportunity to launch our programme of events, with an understanding that our work, creativity, culture and roles in helping to shape this country, go well beyond one month.

PLAYING THE

RACE CARD

‘Playing the Race Card’ is a project conceived by one of our founding members, Claudine Eccleston. It is a call out to UK artists who identify as Black to submit artworks responding to perceptions or experiences in relation to the concept of the 'race card'.

We ask that artists to consider how this problematic metaphor can be turned on its head, and explore ideas that replace a culture of victim blaming with a celebration of diversity. 

Guitar lessons

We run informal acoustic music sessions with small groups of young people, led by international recording artist, Anyme Abdallah and guitarist, Paul Butler. Both musicians have decades of experience writing, recording and performing music -  Anyme is currently working on her 9th album!

We're so thankful to them for giving up some of their time to support these young musicians, who have limited access to more formal lessons due to cost/accessibility.
